Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Intent

At Downton Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential skill that broadens horizons, fosters curiosity, and deepens cultural understanding. Our intent is for all children to be articulate, informed, and empowered in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). We aim for our pupils to develop confidence in speaking, listening, and reading in French, equipping them with the skills to communicate effectively. Through engaging and structured language learning, we nurture a love for languages and an appreciation of different cultures, preparing children for a global society.

Implementation

  • We teach French in Key Stage 2 using Language Angels, which is a structured and progressive scheme that ensures comprehensive coverage of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

  • Lessons are immersive and interactive, incorporating speaking, listening, and reading, activities. We prioritise oracy, encouraging children to use technical vocabulary confidently.

  • Learning is accessible to all, with carefully planned differentiation and scaffolding to support every learner.

  • We teach French weekly allowing children to engage meaningfully with language and culture and to develop skills by revisiting them overtime.

  • We integrate French into the wider curriculum where possible, reinforcing learning through songs, games, role-play, and cultural experiences.

Impact

  • Pupils develop confidence and fluency in speaking and understanding French.

  • They can articulate ideas clearly, use correct pronunciation, and apply key grammatical structures.

  • By the end of KS2, pupils have a strong foundation in French, preparing them for further language learning at secondary school.

  • Our approach fosters a positive attitude towards language learning, encouraging children to see themselves as global citizens with the ability to communicate beyond their immediate community.

  • Regular assessments and pupil voice interviews demonstrate that children retain knowledge, enjoy language learning, and feel empowered to use their skills in real-life contexts.

By embedding high expectations, inclusivity, and engagement into our MFL curriculum, we ensure all pupils develop a lifelong appreciation for languages and cultural diversity.
